English Golden Retrievers – Discover How They Differ From The American And Canadian Goldens

If you are a fan of goldens, you can quickly see the difference between American Golden Retrievers and English Golden Retrievers. Both are beautiful, friendly and intelligent, but physical differences are distinct.

The breed originated in Scotland. It was specifically bred to retrieve water fowl and other game birds. Consequently they have a soft mouth and love the water. It was originally a combination of the flat coated retriever, spaniels and bloodhounds. Later the Irish setter was also introduced along with the St. Johns water dog. All of this to produce the ultimate hunting dog for hunting parties. All of the breeds that were combined to make perfect goldens were sporting breeds.

The temperament of the golden makes them ideal candidates for use as seeing-eye dogs, hearing dogs, drug detector dogs and search and rescue heroes. Both the American and English Golden Retrievers are suited for these tasks.

English Golden Retrievers are prevalent in Europe and Australia. The English type is stockier than the American and Canadian Golden Retrievers. The muzzle is shorter and wider. Its forehead is significantly blockier and the chest is wider and deeper. The tail is also shorter. The English type male should be 22-24 inches in height and the females 20-22 inches. The UKC has not designated a breed standard for weight. The gait of the golden should be well coordinated, smooth and free.

The coats of English Golden Retrievers are light to dark gold. The undercoat is waterproof and dense. It should be straight, but moderately wavy is acceptable. The UKC does allow cream as an acceptable color, but the AKC does not. The darker mahogany color is not acceptable in the British show ring. Pure white is not an acceptable color, nor is black. A dog can be disqualified if its nose lacks pigment.

The kind, confident and friendly demeanor of the English Golden Retrievers is no different than that of its American and Canadian counterparts. They enjoy meeting people and dogs. They are not good watch dogs. Although they may have a very loud bark as a stranger approaches, they will welcome them and lead the stranger to the valuables in the home. They can be disqualified in the ring if they show any hostility to people or other dogs. This assures the potential owner of a good family dog.

This is an extremely intelligent dog that loves to work. They thrive on obedience trials as well as agility. As an active and fun loving animal, they are very adaptable to work or to sitting in a blind for hours during a hunt. They easily focus on a task and make owners proud in obedience competitions as well. Their desire to please their owners or handlers is unsurpassed. They do not require any harsh training and respond well to upbeat, positive training. Sometimes they appear to want to be a lap dog and love being with their people.

The basic difference between the American and the English Golden Retrievers is the way they look. Disposition is the quality that breeders seek and ranks up there with the appearance of the stockier English type.
